Colon passage time in rabbits in relation to the formation of caecotrophes.

چکیده
The mechanisms which lead to a diurnal variation in the formation of hard and soft faeces in the rabbit are still to a great extent not known. Both types of faeces originate from caecal contents (BONNAFOUS and RAYNAUD, 1967; YOSHIHARA and KANDATSU, 1960). It is therefore presumed that differentiation occurs during the passage through the colon. This results in the hard faeces, with a low concentration of nutrient substances, and the caecotrophes, with approximately the same composition as the caecal contents (ELSDEN et al., 1946; FRANK et al., 1951; HARDER, 1949; SCHEUNERT and ZIMMERMANN, 1952). Several phenomena which may play a part in the formation of the two types of faeces are discussed: the rapidity of passage through the colon of that material destined for caecotrophic formation (THACKER and BRANDT, 1955), an increased absorption of water, protein and soluble substances during the hard faeces period (BONNAFOUS and RAYNAUD, 1967, 1970) and a different form of transport of the fluid and solid phase of the caecal contents (BJORNHAG, 1972). So far no actual figures for the colon passage time in relation to the type of faeces are available. In 1:he present investigation the passage time from ileum or caecum to excretion was determined under consideration of the formation of hard and soft pellets, with different markers for the fluid and solid part of the digesta being used. Furthermore, the passage time of already formed hard and soft faeces through the distal colon was measured.

Dietary phytate lowers K-ras mutational frequency, decreases DNA-adduct and hydroxyl radical formation in azoxymethane-induced colon cancer
Objective(s): Dietary phytate is known to protect against azoxymethane (AOM)-induced preneoplastic lesions. The present study was designed to determine whether dietary phytate affects mutation frequency in colon epithelial cells challenged with azoxymethane in vivo, through lowering the formation of O6-methyl guanosine (O6-MeG) and 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) ad...

Introduction: In the infants, meconium passage is an important phenomenon in the first days of life and acceleration its excretion can prevent complications. Foot reflexology is one of complementary therapies that can help to improve health status. The purpose of this study was to determine effect of foot reflexology on meconium passage in healthy infants. Methods: In this controlled clinica...
متن کاملFeeding behaviour in rabbits
As a monogastric herbivore, the rabbit presents a unique feeding behaviour compared to other domestic animals, since he belongs to the Lagomorpha order (Leporidae family: rabbits and hares, Grassé and Dekeuser, 1955), and consequently possess a main specificity that is the caecotrophy. For recall (see details in chapter 1), the caecotrophy is a complete behaviour involving an excretion and an i...
متن کاملTHE PROPHYLACTIC EFFECT OF LACTULOSE ON NEONATAL HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA BY ACCELERATION OF MECONIUM PASSAGE
One of the causes of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is increased reabsorption of bilirubin from meconium in the gastrointestinal tract. This occurs when the conjugated bilirubin which is excreted into the colon is 'unconjugated by beta glucuronidase activity, present in the neonatal intestine, which hydrolyzes bilirubin diglucuronide into unconjugated bilirubin, which subsequently is reabsorbe...
متن کاملGold nanoparticles as a radio-sensitizer of colon cancer cells at high megavoltage energies: An In-Vitro study
Introduction: In the point of physical view, there are no significant differences between tumor and normal tissues during radiation therapy. Radio-sensitizers have a key role to address the issue. Exploiting high atomic number, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been introduced as novel radio-sensitizers and have shown promising result in the field. Owing to high mass attenuation c...
